Turkey descends into chaos

On 23rd January, the Institute for Christian Democratic politics and Hanns Seidel Foundation organized a debate on Turkey.

When talking about situation in Turkey, MP and sociologist Ivan Gabal mentioned German newspapers, which consider Turkey to be descending into inner chaos and it might become a failed state. The other guests basically agree, Journalist Tereza Engel said the black scenario is to happen in three or two years. However, Jan Fingerland said he thought it would not lead to a disintegration of the country as its democracy tradition is long enough to survive current political turmoil.

Recent events in Turkey made the society polarized, said Ivan Gabal, nevertheless, Mrs. Engelová argued that even though the people does not want to have a presidential system they will support the constitutional changes Mr. Erdogan proposed as they are afraid of possible collapse of the country.

When considering danger Turkey might cause to the European union. Mrs. Engelová said that Turkey is economically weak and that economic pressure is the leverage the EU has to make Turkey cooperate.

The discussion was hosted by Veronika Sedláčková.

Throughout the entire evening the guests and visitors enjoyed music by the Adams Emily duo.
